A homologous series is like a family of compounds that share certain properties. For example, there are notes on my website for grade 10 about alkanes, alkenes and alcohols. These are all different homologous series.
Organic compounds that belong to the same homologous series have:
- The same general formula (the relationship between C and H atoms in the molecule)
- Similar chemical properties
- Gradual change in their physical properties (boiling point, melting point, density, etc.) because some have more atoms in the molecule
- Successive compounds differ by CH2
