What is a homologous series?

Organic compounds that belong to the same homologous series have:

  • The same general formula (the relationship between C and H atoms in the molecule)
  • Similar chemical properties
  • Gradual change in their physical properties (boiling point, melting point, density, etc.) because some have more atoms in the molecule
  • Successive compounds differ by CH2
